Podcamp at the Wild Fig

I’m feeling a bit guilty here. We were planning on doing a live post from Podcamp on Saturday but somehow between the presentations, lunch and conversations we never really got around to it. Well, better late than never, and the event is still worth a write-up.Being held on the day before the night of that game I was a little dubious as to how well the attendees would settle in and I didn’t really know what to expect. But the weather, location and the event itself meshed really nicely into what turned out to be a very relaxing and interesting day.
There’s nothing quite like a Cape Town summer day to get everyone into a good, chilled mood and the Wild Fig provided a cool venue where we weren’t locked indoors.
The usual suspects were all present, along with a good dose of new faces, and despite the underlying excitement regarding the inevitable thumping that was occurring later that night (sorry, I could wax lyrical about this for the rest of the month) everyone got into their grooves pretty easily.
The things that stood out for me? Skyrove’s wifi tree and Brad Shrimpton of Apple’s presentation. His demo of the Garage Band app had all of us captivated. Having been a lecture-dependent student until this year I was really excited to see the educational potential of podcasting.
And my personal favourite - a chat with Sarah, Dave, Tim and Claire in the shade of the wifi tree that ranged from suicidal dogs to spinning cows and beyond.
Coupled with some more interesting presentations, including two particularly cool ones from Dave Duarte and Rowan Polovin of MyVideo, the hours flowed by pretty quickly.
All in all it was a pretty cool day spent in a nice vibe, and I can only assume that subsequent Podcamp’s are going to build on this one.
