South Africa know a thing or two about support
by Damian Burke on 2007/10/19
So I think it’s safe to say that the
Rugby World Cup fever is everywhere. Everyone’s wearing green and gold; from our news presenters to the dogs going for walks in the park across the road from my house and the QuirkStars – the whole country seems to have gone
“bokke” mad.
The words
“Show your support for the Springboks” and
“Support the Boks” are everywhere in preparation of Saturday’s final. Nelson Mandela and Queen Elizabeth II have both
publicly pledged their support for their respective home teams (but surely they just cancel each other out!?).
If it were a case of the team with the most supporters being the victor, England might be better off having a nice cup of tea and a sit down. Well, according to
Google Hot Trends anyway…
GO BOKKE!
Quirk London has SA flags stuck up all over the office! An English lass just told me to, "Enjoy the cricket tomorrow..."

I'm not the biggest rugby fan in the world but I find myself getting quite teary eyed seeing a country come together like South Africa has over this past week. Even I will be wearing my green and gold tonight!
Sport really does seem to play a big part in creating unity - go figure ;-)
GO BOKKE!!!!!

I went to town this morning and everywhere people were wearing the green and gold. SA flags were stuck on cars, taxis, in hats, worn as bandannas, as aprons... all colours.. there was a sense of unity... it was beautiful to see. The 'energy' felt a bit different than normal Saturday madness. The people almost seemed a bit more patient and just a little happier than normal. Excitement is in the air. Smiles seem to come easier... I don't know, could just be me. I don't like watching sport other than figure skating =) but I will definitely be watching tonight. GO BOKKE!
